1. How to Get There: Transportation (교통편)
Getting to Seoraksan is a journey through Korea’s beautiful countryside. To make the most of your day, we recommend starting early (around 7:00 AM).
Step 1: Seoul to Sokcho (서울에서 속초로) Go to Seoul Gyeongbu Bus Terminal(서울고속버스터미널) or East Seoul Bus Terminal(동서울터미널). Take an express bus to Sokcho(속초).
Duration: Approx. 2.5 to 3 hours.
Step 2: Sokcho to Seoraksan Entrance (속초에서 설악산 입구로) Once you arrive in Sokcho, look for Local Bus No. 7 or 7-1(7번 또는 7-1번 시내버스). These buses run frequently and will take you directly to the Seoraksan National Park entrance.
Tip: You can use your T-Money(티머니) card just like in Seoul!
2. Essential Packing List: Preparation (준비물)
The terrain in Seoraksan is rocky and can be challenging. Preparation is key to enjoying the views without the pain.
Footwear (등산화/운동화): Hiking boots are ideal, but sturdy sneakers with good grip are a must. Avoid flip-flops! The Ulsanbawi(울산바위) trail has over 800 steep steps.
Layers (여벌 옷): Even if Seoul is warm, the mountain air is much cooler. Bring a light windbreaker(바람막이).
Water & Snacks (물과 간식): While there are restaurants at the base, you’ll want water and energy bars for the trail. You can buy these at the convenience stores(편의점) near the park entrance.
Cash/Card (현금 및 카드): Most places accept credit cards, but having some cash is helpful for small stalls or buying traditional souvenirs.
3. Pro Reservation Tips: Cable Cars & Timing (예약 및 방문 팁)
The Cable Car Secret (케이블카 예약): You cannot book the Seoraksan Cable Car online. It is 100% walk-in only (현장 예매만 가능).
Strategy: As soon as you enter the park, head straight to the Cable Car(케이블카) ticket office first. Buy your ticket, then explore the Sinheungsa Temple(신흥사) while you wait for your turn.
Visit on Weekdays (평일 방문 권장): Seoraksan is extremely popular. If possible, visit on a weekday to avoid massive crowds and long lines for the cable car.
Check the Weather (날씨 확인): Always check the weather forecast. High winds can lead to the cancellation of cable car services for safety.
